Aphidius ervi

The parasitic wasp Aphidius ervi is very efficient for the biological control of bigger aphids, especially the potato aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae) and foxglove aphid (Aulacorthum solani). It parasitizes adults and nymphs. Parasitism is easy to recognize by the golden-brown colored mummies. A single female can lay hundreds of eggs during the first 4 days of her adult life.  A. ervi is a good searcher, able to find aphid colonies from a long distance by detecting "alarm signals" produced by an infected plant or the smell of honeydew secreted by its hosts. The presence of a parasitic wasp can cause such panic in an aphid colony, that some aphids fall to the ground where they usually die.
Aphidius ervi is applicable on all greenhouse crops on which suitable hosts occur.
