Aphidius colemani / Aphidius ervi

Because aphid colonies often consist of several aphid species, it can be necessary to introduce both parasitic wasps Aphidius ervi and Aphidius colemani. Both parasitic wasps are look-a-likes, but differ in size. A. ervi is twice as large as A. colemani. A.colemani is very efficient for the biological control of the cotton aphid and the green peach aphid and A. ervi attacks the potato aphid and foxglove aphid.

Both Aphidius species parasitize adults and nymphs. Parasitized aphids turn into golden-brown colored mummies. A single Aphidius female can lay hundreds of eggs during the first 4 days of her adult life. They are good searchers, able to find aphid colonies from a long distance by detecting "alarm signals" produced by an infected plant or the smell of honeydew secreted by its hosts.

The presence of a parasitic wasp can cause panic in an aphid colony, aphids often let themselves fall to the ground where they usually die.

Aphidius-Mix-System is applicable on all greenhouse crops on which suitable hosts occur.
