Aphelinus abdominalis

Although Aphelinus abdominalis parasitizes several species of big-sized aphids, it is mainly used for biological control of potato aphid and foxglove aphid. It can parasitize any aphid stage, even winged ones.  Aphids parasitized by A. abdominalis are easy to recognize by the black mummies. Compared to other aphid parasitoids, A. abdominalis has a long-lasting activity. Oviposition reaches cruising speed on the 3^rd or 4^th day, parasitizing 5-10 aphids per day, and continues so for about 8 weeks. A. abdominalis also host feeds, even on aphid species it does not parasitize.
Although some hyperparasitoids are known to exist, in practice it does not appear to be a problem, as is the case with some other aphid parasitoids. Aphelinus abdominalis is applied in combination with other aphid control agents on several vegetable and ornamental greenhouse crops such as sweet pepper, tomato, eggplant, bean, gerbera, rose, chrysanthemum, ...
