17/08/2020 - During this period of the year, many lawns are damaged by beetle larvae. Based on parasitic nematodes, B-Green provides an efficient, fast and - above all - 100% biological solution.
Conquering Chafers
The most commonly occurring beetle pest in turf is the larvae of the garden chafer (Phyllopertha horticola). Usually found just underneath the turf, the grubs eat the roots often leading to parts of the lawn dying and becoming detach.
Fortunately, there is an effective biological solution B-Green. Available from Biobest, it is based on the parasitic nematode Heterorhabditis bacteriophora.
“After application, the nematodes start looking straight away for beetle larvae hiding in the root layer,” explains Biobest advisor, Nick Nagels. “Having invaded the pest larvae, the nematodes multiply inside - while at the same time releasing symbiotic bacteria. The combination of bacteria and the growing nematode population kills the beetle larvae.”
Curative control
Applied curatively, B-Green is a fast and efficient solution. To optimise results, the soil must be moist when the beneficial nematodes are applied and the soil temperature should remain above 12°C for the following four weeks. Nick goes on to explain how to apply B-Green: “The nematodes are supplied in a carrier which should be mixed with water, so they are evenly dispersed in a liquid solution. This is then sprayed onto the area of the lawn to be treated.”
Vine weevil also targeted
As well as being effective against the larvae of the garden chafer, B-Green also controls larvae of the black vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus).
