3/04/2018 - For a decade, growers have been using different Trichoderma fungi to improve the performance of their ornamental and vegetable crops. Containing the unique strain Trichoderma asperellum T34, ASPERELLO™ T34 Biocontrol® is especially effective against Fusarium, Pythium and other soilborne diseases. Proven to strengthen plant roots, its contribution has been clearly confirmed in six trials conducted in 2017.
Biobest first introduced this biological fungicide in US for protected ornamentals at the beginning of the 2016 season. It made its first appearance in Belgium, the Netherlands and France at the end of 2016. In Canada, the product will hit the market very soon.
ASPERELLO™ T34 Biocontrol® was registered in all those countries as a biofungicide, a plant protection product, and the producer had to provide authorities with extensive scientific proof of its performance.
Due to the fact that regulations differ from country to country, ASPERELLO™ T34 Biocontrol®, is not always authorised for the same use, diseases or crops in every of those countries.
Were do we stand today?
In the United States, the product is registered in 27 states (consult our website for up to date information) for protected ornamentals against Fusarium, Pythium, Phytophthora and Rhizoctonia.
In France, its use is allowed in all protected ornamental crops and against Pythium in tomatoes, peppers and eggplants.
In Belgium, it has registration for all ornamentals (restricted to closed irrigation systems) to control Fusarium and damping-off and against Pythium in tomatoes, peppers and eggplants.
In the Netherlands, ASPERELLO™ T34 Biocontrol® is currently only registered in carnations against Fusarium, and against Pythium in tomatoes, peppers and eggplants
In Canada, it will be available for ornamental crops (under protection) to control Fusarium oxysporum.
Biobest is working together with the supplier, the registration authorities and research organizations to broaden the registration in each country to more crops and diseases.
The Biobest Team along with growers, industry partners, universities and research stations have been conducting several trials in Belgium, the United States and the Netherlands in order to identify the potential of the product in the ornamental sector and optimise its use.
The results?
The trial results are extremely positive. In the six articles that follow, we give growers and researchers a chance to see the results from themselves. They show that ASPERELLO™ T34 Biocontrol® strengthens the root environment, establishes even in the presence of disinfectants, stimulates plant and root growth and suppresses fungi, making a real contribution to a healthy and quality crop.
