What is Orius laevigatus?

  • Voracious, oval pirate bug for controlling thrips 
  • Adults are brownish black with grey-white spots and have conspicuously red eyes
  • The larvae are yellowish orange with orange-brown spots
  • Has been successfully controlling thrips in Europe for twenty years

What are the benefits of Orius laevigatus?

  • Adult pirate bugs eat all mobile thrips stages
  • The nymphs mainly devour thrips larvae
  • Orius laevigatus also eats aphids, whitefly and moth eggs
  • Adults and nymphs can survive on pollen

How does it control pests?

  • A nymph easily devours 50 thrips larvae
  • An adult female kills up to 20 thrips nymphs

In which crops is Orius laevigatus effective?

  • Effective in many ornamental, fruit and vegetable crops
  • Especially in pollen bearing crops such as paprika
